Instructions for growing your Viola & Pansy seeds

  • Light & Warmth

Place your pot inside where it will receive direct sunlight, such as a south facing windowsill. The area should be warm, but not excessively hot. Aim for a temperature of 68-75f which should match most household temperatures.

Germination may happen as quickly as a few days. In most cases, seeds will germinate in 5-20. Be patient and allow the seeds to find the correct time to sprout.

If germinating outside, place the pot out of direct sunlight as too much sun & heat will cook the seed and it may not germinate.

  • Water & Cover

Keep the soil moist but not saturated. Spritz the soil daily to avoid washing out the seeds. We prefer a mister or spray bottle help control the moisture level.

Cover the top of the pot with plastic wrap secured by a rubber band to retain moisture and create a greenhouse effect. Remove the plastic only to water the seeds. Once most seeds have germinated, you can remove the plastic permanently.

As the seedling grows, bottom water by placing the pot in a dish of water for about 5 minutes. The pot’s holes will allow water to be drawn up into the soil, encouraging deeper root growth. Let the pot drip dry before returning it to sunlight.

  • Grow Them

Continue growing the seedling indoors for several weeks following the watering instructions.

Once the seedling is big enough, feel free to transplant into an outdoor container or directly into the garden. We recommend hardening seedlings for 1 week to help reduce transplant shock.

To grow in patio container, transplant after ~4 weeks of growing. Use a high quality potting mix. Keep plants watered daily through heat of summer, decrease watering frequency as temperatures start to drop in the fall.

To plant in garden, dig hole slightly larger than pot. Carefully remove plant from pot & place in awaiting hole. Backfill soil around the plant and press firmly to remove air pockets. Water frequently.
